Reiki for the doubters

I was watching The Crown recently (you haven’t missed a new season, I’m just really late watching the last) and there’s a scene when Princess Diana is asked by her friend who can corroborate her story and she begins to list her many therapists by name. One is an astrologist, another an aromatherapist and next, her friend jumps in and asks mockingly ‘Reiki healer?’

It made me chuckle because I get it, I was there once.

Thirty years later has much changed? Well, you tell me..!

From my experience I would say yes, however I still remember the early days when I was trying to get my head around what was happening during a Reiki treatment, and how could it be that I was feeling so much better from a light touch. I keep this mind whenever someone comes to see me for the first time, even if they’re had Reiki before, it’s a new experience!

Many find Reiki after they’ve tried what feels like everything, or things are so tough there’s nothing to lose. And some (like me) know something isn’t right but are so numb to the real pain, they’re not aware of what’s holding them back. And there are others who are up for trying something new!

I once heard that when we’re in survival mode we can’t go beyond into the realm of beauty until our basic needs are met. From experience I understand this to be true but there are ways around it, to glimpse into beauty.

Reiki treatments offer a space to pause and let go of all problems, giving yourself the opportunity to hope for a better outcome. A time to relax and experience a shimmer of sparkle - while you’re completely supported, even if you feel like everything else is out of your control.

Health and well-being affects everything, but we generally take it for granted until we’re unwell. And while conventional medicine is brilliant, in many cases it doesn’t hold all the answers. We want more - to experience the wholeness and true wellness of who we are.

I recently heard a conversation with Dr Gladys McGarey MD who pioneered holistic health in America. Now 102 she’s still working, helping people. In this interview she talked about listening to the physician within - and I thought that was wonderful! You know your body better than anyone else.

When we culturally begin to accept that;

  • We can heal ourselves

  • We’re not here to suffer, healing can be easy and beautiful

  • We hold more control over our well-being than we realise

We’ll regain our true personal power and have a changed world.
