Letting go…

We have to let go of stuff all the time. Sometimes it’s easy (when we don’t really care) other times it can be one of the hardest lessons to learn (when we’ve invested lots of time, love, energy, money into someone or something).

When I was a little girl my dad used to read fairy tales and fables to me and one of my favourites that I still think of today is about the sun and the wind.

The story goes something like this -

The sun and wind were fighting over who was stronger and they couldn’t agree. So when they saw a man walking through the park they decided whoever could take the jacket off the man would be strongest and therefore the winner.

The wind thought, ‘yay, I’ve got this!’ And he blew a gust and gale. However, the stronger the wind blew, the tighter the man pulled his coat over him.

Finally the wind gave up, and said; ‘ok sun, your turn.’

And so the sun, doing what the sun does best, shone brightly and through the clear blue sky the man started to feel warmer. The stronger the sun shone, the hotter the man got and eventually took his coat off.

The sun had won.

This fable has many lessons, and for me, a perfect example to help us let go.

The winds of change may rustle our feathers, mess up our hair and damage some things, but holding on tight - never wins. Pushing or forcing is not the energy we need to be expressing. We’ve got to learn to unclench the tight grip on our expectations and trust the warm, glowing love from within.

It’s the only way to dance with change. Open your heart and let it shine bright, guiding you like a lighthouse in a storm.
