When limiting beliefs can hold you back and how to break through them
What are your limiting beliefs?
Are you aware of them and have you been able to change the script for your life?
Limiting beliefs can surface at any age and many come from childhood when we take them in and don’t question their validity. We hold them close, try to bury or ignore them and even adjust our lives around them.
So, what can you do?
The first step is becoming aware of what they are and how they’re holding you back.
You might not realise that you have a limiting belief working its destruction until it comes up over and over in your life.
Or it may be negative self-talk that you keep saying to yourself and know it’s holding you back.
If something is blocking you at the moment check-in that it’s not some pesky little negative belief running the show in your mind. Sit and journal letting the thoughts move from your mind onto the paper or talk it through with a friend, and listen to the words you say. It might come to you through meditation or exercise (I know I often receive insight when I’m running).
Reframe, change the script.
Whenever you catch yourself saying negative self-talk, stop and correct yourself.
Create a new affirmation to repeat in your mind many times throughout the day. If you’re talking to someone and a limiting belief automatically pops out that isn’t true, correct yourself then and there.
Affirmations work on your subconscious mind and need to be said in the positive with emotion to be effective for example; “I am enough” or “I am loved”.
Taking action and finding proof.
Nothing changes a limiting belief like proving to yourself that it’s not true. If you’re feeling unloved for example, listing all the people you love and who love you too, and then reminding yourself as often as you need.
Powerful change happens by taking action - facing your limiting belief head-on, so it’s no longer true.
I’ve had to face many limiting beliefs and still do.
One, in particular, I hadn’t realised was holding me back until it was no longer my truth.
I was a good student in secondary school until year 10 when I received my first ‘C’ for a history paper. As it was handed to me, covered in red ink what stood out was the comment ‘this is not a sentence’ repeated many times.
I was ashamed and embarrassed and dropped the subject as soon as I could. How could I not write a sentence after all these years at school?!
From that point on I always questioned my ability to write properly. So much so that I believed I couldn’t write. Those words from my teacher had literally become a ‘sentence’.
This held me back until March 2021 (can you believe over 25 years!) when I decided to commit to writing a blog post every month - ta-da! It filled me with fear (and many times still does as I press ‘publish’!) but it’s not about me - I want to help people learn more about Reiki and make changes, to live their best life.
I’m not going to say it’s easy, as some posts can take days to write and most definitely some are better than others. They’re not all grammatically correct or formal, but they are my voice. And I’m Australian…
Each post is like my own personal victory over my now extinguished limited belief. When I receive messages from people that the post has touched them in some way, it fills my heart.
What are your limiting belief/s and how have you overcome them?
